See our School Information page for locations and times.

Mr. Michael Matie, II Dan Black Belt, is Golden Tiger's instructor.  Mr. Matie has been involved in martial arts for 24 years and has been an instructor for 10 years.  Mr. Matie is committed to quality instruction of Taekwon-Do.

Taekwon-Do (also spelled Tae Kwon Do, Taekwondo or Taegwondo) is the world's most commonly practiced martial art and an Olympic event.  This martial arts form emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, using the leg's greater reach and power to disable the opponent from a distance.  Taekwon-Do training also includes a comprehensive system of hand strikes and blocks. Taekwondo as a sport and exercise is popular with people of both sexes and of many ages. Physically, Taekwondo develops strength, speed, balance, flexibility, and stamina. An example of the union of mental and physical discipline is the breaking of boards, which requires both physical mastery of the technique and the concentration to focus one's strength.

"Tae" means "jumping, flying, to kick or smash with the foot."

"Kwon" means "fist, to punch or destroy with the fist."

"Do" means "the art or way."

Taekwon-Do is the mental training and techniques of unarmed combat for self defense as well as health.  It involves the skilled application of punches, kicks, blocks and dodges with bare hands and feet for the rapid destruction of a moving opponent or opponents.

Taekwon-Do practices five tenets which are taught and recited at every class:

                     (1) Courtesy (2) Integrity (3) Perseverance (4) Self Control (5) Indomitable Spirit.

Taekwon-Do holds to the following oath:

(1)  I shall observe the tenets of Taekwon-Do

(2)  I shall respect the instructors and seniors.

(3)  I shall never misuse Taekwon-Do.

(4)  I shall be a champion of freedom and justice.

(5)  I shall build a more peaceful world.
